What a way to close out a stellar second year for OCW with Tommy Dreamer’s Hardcore Halloween!
Not only did we see a myriad of stipulation matches but the tournament for the brand new Tag Team Championships also got underway.
International guest Tommy Dreamer was the first to open the night, explaining that he’s the general manager and will choose the best dressed fan from the crowd to be his manager for his hardcore match later in the night. As has come to be expected, OCW Champion Andy Phoenix interrupted, showing disrespect to the Innovator of Violence.
Tag Team Tournament Qualifying Match: JXT & Jake Navara VS. Cadman Turner & Cletus.
Fan favourites Cadman and Cletus proved they could also be the favourites to win the tag team titles in the first match of the tournament. Cadman hit his patented chokeslam followed by Cletus landing a splash from the big man’s shoulders to pick up the win and advance to the next round in January.
Last Woman Standing Match: Kellyanne (formerly Nakita Naridian) VS. Vixsin.
You can always count on OCW’s women wrestlers to go just as hard as the guys, and this last woman standing match was no exception. Kellyanne and Vixsin brutalised each other with oven trays, with Vixsin taking a hotdog from a fan and shoving it down her opponent’s throat—with an ample helping of sauce and mustard—at one point! No woman was left standing at all, with Vixsin sitting on Kellyanne for the ten count and the win.
Tag Team Tournament Qualifying Match: Gabriel Wolfe & Josh “The Axe” Shooter VS. Manny Grayson & Surprise Partner Jacko Lantern.
The Halloween spirit was in full force in the second tag team tournament qualifying match of the night. First-time partners Shooter and Wolfe entered the ring sporting masks, however Grayson went all out with his face painted as The Crow. It looked like Grayson was going to be left to fend for himself until the lights went out and Jacko Lantern appeared in the ring in all his spooky regalia! While this is the first time Grayson and Lantern have teamed in OCW, they could very well be contenders for the titles, as their win at Hardcore Halloween will attest.
Triple Threat Elimination Tables Match: Joel “The Smash Hit” Bateman VS. Maddog VS. KrackerJak.
This match was sure to prove a highlight of the card, and the three men known for their hardcore ways didn’t disappoint. Krackers, Maddog and Bateman brutalised each other with staple guns, the requisite tables and all manner of weapons. A highlight was Bateman being thrown onto a table that didn’t break and instead its leg almost impaled him in the family jewels! Krackers and Bateman proved no match for the innovator of violence in his own right, Maddog, as he put away both men.
Hardcore Match: Tommy Dreamer VS. Slade Mercer.
The hardcore shenanigans continued after intermission, with two lucky fans in Halloween costume's chosen to be Dreamer’s manager's for his match against OCW newcomer Slade Mercer.
Mercer proved his worth by taking it to the hardcore legend, working their way through the crowd whilst Dreamer administered chops and bumps to Mercer heard ’round the world. While it looked like the young star had got the better of Dreamer in an attempt to backdrop him onto a prop tombstone, it was Dreamer who hit his patented Death Valley Driver onto Mercer and the tombstone for a brutal finish.
Alexi Papadopoulos VS. Mickey “Fantabulous” Jackson.
Jackson made his return to OCW to take on fan favourite Papadopoulos. Jackson showed off his strength and physique for the crowd, but it was underdog Papadopoulos who gained the victory.
After the match, Papadopoulos addressed the crowd, informing them he’s taking an extended leave of absence to get his personal life and health back on track. Best of luck in your future endeavours, Alexi, and we hope to see you in an OCW ring again soon.
OCW Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match: Andy Phoenix VS. Adam Brooks.
Adam Brooks proved himself to be an evenly matched competitor for the seemingly unstoppable champion, Andy Phoenix, in this hellacious ladder match. The action spilled into the crowd at times, but both men knew they needed to make it back into the ring, and to the top of a ladder to retrieve the ultimate prize hanging above.
Phoenix sacrificed Brooksy and one of the ladders that could help him win the match on more than one occasion. Brooksy was not to be outdone, though, scaling heights that proved why he’s one of Australia’s premier high flyers. “This is Awesome” and “OCW” chants filled the arena as these two men went to war. In what was an uncharacteristically clean victory for Phoenix, the champion bested his worthy opponent by ultimately retrieving his gold after a bit of a struggle with the chain suspending it above the ring.
General manager Tommy Dreamer returned to the OCW arena to congratulate the two men on a hard fought battle. Dreamer urged Brooks not to make excuses for his loss, but to move on to better and brighter things. In another rare display of sportsmanship, Phoenix allowed Dreamer to place the championship on his person. Phoenix and Brooks acknowledged each other’s efforts by shaking hands, but the champion refused to shake the elder Dreamer’s hand. That’s the champion we’ve come to know and (love to) hate since his crowning in February: leaving the OCW arena with his championship in hand.
Until next year…
